GRCA hands out awards, grants
The Breslau Park ad hoc committee is one of five recipients of this year’s Community Conservation Grants, awarded last week by the Grand River Conservation Authority. Each is worth $600.
In Breslau, the money is earmarked for trees and shrubs at Breslau Memorial Park and Hopewell Heights Park.
Other recipients include the Speed Valley chapter of Trout Unlimited Canada (TUC) to plant saplings and seedlings along Marden Creek at the north end of Guelph and the 31st Guelph Scouts to build bat houses that will be installed at their camp near Belwood.
The Grand River Watershed Awards took place October 18.
Among the award recipients was St. Agatha’s Jeff Grant, a Grade 10 student who was recognized for his love of butterflies, especially monarchs. He raises hundreds of caterpillars of several species on his family’s farm. After seeing hundreds of milkweed plants destroyed in his township, he began to volunteer at Laurel Creek Nature Centre, where he educates people of all ages about monarchs and their habitat.
