GRCA hands out awards, grants

The Bres­lau Park ad hoc com­mit­tee is one of five re­cip­i­ents of this year’s Com­mu­nity Con­ser­va­tion Grants, awarded last week by the Grand River Con­ser­va­tion Au­thor­ity. Each is worth $600.

In Bres­lau, the money is ear­marked for trees and shrubs at Bres­lau Me­mo­rial Park and Hopewell Heights Park.

Other re­cip­i­ents in­clude the Speed Val­ley chap­ter of Trout Un­lim­ited Canada (TUC) to plant saplings and seedlings along Mar­den Creek at the north end of Guelph and the 31st Guelph Scouts to build bat houses that will be in­stalled at their camp near Bel­wood.

The Grand River Water­shed Awards took place Oc­to­ber 18.

Among the award re­cip­i­ents was St. Agatha’s Jeff Grant, a Grade 10 stu­dent who was rec­og­nized for his love of but­ter­flies, es­pe­cially monar­chs. He raises hun­dreds of cater­pil­lars of sev­eral species on his fam­ily’s farm. Af­ter see­ing hun­dreds of milk­weed plants de­stroyed in his town­ship, he be­gan to vol­un­teer at Lau­rel Creek Na­ture Cen­tre, where he ed­u­cates peo­ple of all ages about monar­chs and their habi­tat.
