Cyclist listed as critical after head-on crash

A Victoria man in his late 20s was taken to hospital in critical condition yesterday afternoon after his bicycle collided head-on with a Chevrolet van.

The crash occurred in the afternoon rush hour at the corner of Quadra Street and Topaz Avenue.

The cyclist was not wearing a helmet and crossed into the oncoming lanes of Quadra to avoid stopped traffic in the southbound lanes. He was going at a speed after coming downhill on Quadra Street, said Insp. Cory Bond of the Victoria police.

The cyclist was taken to hospital as police investigators rerouted traffic and examined the scene. The crumpled racing bicycle lay on the pavement near the van, its windshield shattered by the impact of the cyclist’s head.

It made for a bad start to Bike to Work Week, an annual push to get commuters out of cars and onto bicycles. Police had no information whether this cyclist was taking part in the event.
