Owners protest vessel duty

MONTREAL — Canadian ship owners say a 25-per-cent federal duty on ships purchased abroad is hurting the industry’s competitiveness and ability to make environmentally friendly advances. The Canadian Shipowners Association yesterday called on the federal government to eliminate the import duty on new vessels, arguing the tariff has failed to successfully promote shipbuilding in Canada.
