Another Canadian off to U.S. Open
GOLF — Jon Mills of Oshawa, Ont., yesterday became the seventh Canadian to qualify for the 2008 U.S. Open. Mills earned his invite to the June 12-15 event at Torrey Pines Golf Club in San Diego by snagging one of 23 spots up for grabs in two days of qualifying at Brookside Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. Mills finished in an 11-way tie at 139 following rounds of 73 and 66. Those 11 began playing off for seven spots on Monday night before darkness halted proceedings. Mills joins David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., Mike Weir of Bright’s Grove, Ont., Calgary’s Stephen Ames, Ian Leggatt of Cambridge, Ont., and Nick Taylor of Abbotsford in the 156-man U.S. Open field.
