Costly fire puts Oak Bay tennis bubble on the sidelines
An early-morning fire yesterday at the Oak Bay Recreation Centre has put tennis off limits at one of the centre’s tennis bubbles indefinitely.
The bubble was taken down, putting three courts out of action, after part of it started to melt in a fire that started about 6 a.m. yesterday.
“We don’t know at this point how long it will be out of action for,” said David Gilchrist, the centre’s manager of administrative services.
The fire started in a cinderblock entry structure to the bubble, said Oak Bay assistant fire chief Tom Pearse.
The entry structure had about $25,000 damage, but it’s not yet known how much it will cost to repair the bubble.
