Big Brown 2-5 favourite

ELMONT — Big Brown is a 2-5 favourite to win the 140th Belmont Stakes on Saturday and become thoroughbred racing’s first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed 30 years ago.

The undefeated colt will leave from the No. 1 post position in the 10-horse field at the longest of the Triple Crown races after winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes by a combined 10 lengths.

Casino Drive, a Kentucky-bred and Japanese-trained winner of the May 10 Peter Pan Stakes, was given secondbest odds at 7-5, according to Belmont Park handicapper Eric Donovan. Denis of Cork at 12-1 will run as the third favourite from the fourth position in the $1-million, 11⁄ mile race in Elmont, New York.

“I just don’t think there is any horse out there that can compete with Big Brown at this stage,” trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. said. “The only horse that is even remotely close is Casino Drive and I’m not afraid of him at all.”
