Candidates should live in municipality
The Times Colonist has published the names and addresses of candidates for the Nov. 19 election. Of the 20 candidates for council, four have given Victoria as their “residence address” even though they live in another municipality, most commonly Saanich.
Section 72 of B.C.’S Local Government Act plainly asks for the “residence address,” remarking that the mailing address must be given additionally (not alternatively) if it is different. I regret that the authorities are relying on the candidates’ own declarations and that the information they have given is not always accurate. It is important to me that my property taxes not be determined by persons who do not pay tax in Victoria themselves. David Bodenberg Victoria
