St. Andrew’s makes return trip to final
Three years ago, St. Andrew’s hosted the B.C. single-a senior boys’ soccer championship and lost the final to St. John Brebeuf from Abbotsford.
St. Andrew’s has made it back to the provincials, which start Thursday at St. Ann’s Academy in Kamloops with six Grade 12s back for another shot at the title.
“I know that St. Ann’s has a very strong team but other than that, I’m going into the tournament blind,” said St. Andrew’s coach Mark Cristante. “Our No. 1 goal is to win our pool. You have to win your pool to make it to the championship semifinals.”
St. Andrew’s is in a pool with St. Ann’s, Unity Christian and Bulkley Valley Christian.
St. Andrew’s plays Bulkley Valley Christian and Unity Christian on Thursday before completing round-robin play on Friday against St. Ann’s. The final is set for 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
St. Andrew’s won the lone Island berth to the provincials with a 5-0 win over Port Hardy and 4-0 victory against North Island Senior Secondary.
“Two of the leaders on our team are Leo Falzon and Gogio de Paolis,’’ said Cristante.
