Avery returns to Rangers
Sean Avery, one of the NHL’S better agitators, could be back in the New York Rangers’ lineup Thursday, after he cleared re-entry waivers on Tuesday.
Avery, 31, was cut by the Rangers during training camp and sent to the team’s American Hockey League affiliate in Connecticut. He was available to be claimed by any of the NHL’S other 29 teams on Tuesday, but none chose to pick up the winger. Avery is in the final year of a four-year, $15.5-million deal he signed with the Dallas Stars in 2008.
The Stars are still paying half of Avery’s $4-million salary this season, so any team claiming him would have been on the hook for about $1 million.
