Rams hammer Rebels
There may be a passing of the torch in B.C. junior football from the traditional power Vancouver Island Raiders of Nanaimo, who have dominated the league for the past decade with the likes of current B.C. Lions star Andrew Harris, to the new kids on the block and defending champion Langley Rams.
The Rams showed Saturday they have no intention of giving up their newly found status as torch holders by moving to 2-0 with a resounding 69-10 victory over the Westshore Rebels of Victoria.
“Last year’s championship team had several fourth-fifth years guys,” Langley GM Jeff Alamolhoda said after the victory. “We need a new leadership group to take ownership of this team. And that group came out today.”
Alamolhoda wouldn’t say his team is the new Raiders, just that his organization is making the commitment to winning.
“We are building a foundation, and we are willing to work hard,” said Alamolhoda, who as head coach led the Rams to an upset win over the Raiders in the 2012 B.C. championship game at Nanaimo and to within a heartbeat of the Canadian junior title in a tense 23-21 loss to the traditional power Saskatoon Hilltops.
Langley has now outscored its opposition 120-10 in its first two games after the season-opening 51-0 drubbing of the Kamloops Broncos.
For the Rebels, who had to face the double-whammy of the Raiders and Rams to open the season, it didn’t get any better after a 35-10 home loss last week at Westhills Stadium against arch-rival Vancouver Island.
