Dog Days of summer

AHHH, the Dog Days of Summer! What a great time to socialize with friends and enjoy making new acquaintan­ces. And what better way to do that than by participat­ing in a common interest. Mutual hobbies always bring people together and are a great tool in breaking the ice when establishi­ng new friendship­s.

There are numerous groups that gather at Goward House on a regular basis to share a common interest and enjoy the social aspect that it brings. Fitness classes, Spanish and French language groups, Taoist Tai Chi, bridge playing sessions, a book club, a writing group and a number of diverse painting groups are only a sample of what is offered. On any weekday, you can find five to ten activities taking place at Goward House.

MONDAY AFTERNOONS

The Goward House Singers, comprised of 42 singers, meet to sing in harmony and perform throughout the year under the direction of Jim Bigsby, with the accompanim­ent of Pam Dickinson on piano. When not entertaini­ng community audiences, they can be found rehearsing at Goward House.

The Goward House Singers enjoy singing show tunes and popular classics. Within this group, there are also soloist opportunit­ies. Not only do they find performing rewarding, but they also have a lot of fun. New members are always welcome. If you love to sing and would enjoy this relaxed and supportive atmosphere, consider joining the Goward House Singers. Following their summer hiatus, they will reconvene Monday, Sept. 9, with a barbecue lunch at noon and a rehearsal session to follow at 1:15 p.m.

TUESDAY MORNINGS

The French group (intermedia­te level) meet weekly for conversati­on, French compositio­n, translatio­n and grammar review. At times, they can also be found enjoying lunch together in the tea room following their session. This group will reconvene Sept. 3. Ce groupe cherche des nouveaux membres. You are welcome to drop-in to see if this group is a good fit for you.

WEDNESDAY AFTERNOONS

The Mah Jong players assemble to draw and discard tiles. This very social group will reconvene Sept. 11 and welcome new players to join them for a game and share in some laughter.

The Craft Group convene each Wednesday afternoon to knit, stitch and sew items for the annual craft fair in November, all the while enjoying lively discussion. This group welcomes new members to join them in the fun.

THURSDAY AFTERNOONS

You’ll find a collection of Social Bridge players in the sunroom. This group welcomes people that are relatively new to bridge or players seeking to brush the dust off their cards. You are invited to drop in to try out this group of friendly and supportive bridge players.

FRIDAY AFTERNOONS

Drop-ins gather together on Friday afternoons for social bridge at Goward House. They gathers weekly and welcome players that are relatively new to the game or are seeking to brush the dust off their cards. You are invited to drop in to try out this group of friendly and supportive bridge players.

A SPECIAL MEETING PLACE

Perhaps you already participat­e in a cohesive social group but your group needs a place to meet on a regular basis. Consider Goward House for your group activities or club meetings. With its furnishing­s, lovely outdoor deck, and expansive grounds, it has the warmth of a private home yet offers the convenienc­es of a recreation­al facility, with handicap access (parking, washrooms and a lift) as well as a charming tea room where you can enjoy a snack or light lunch.

YOU’RE INVITED TO

A SUMMER BARBECUE

In celebratio­n of the Dog Days of Summer, a special barbecue lunch will be available for purchase at Goward House on Wednesday, Aug. 21 (11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) offering a choice of salmon burgers, beef burgers, beef hot dogs, side salad and a feature dessert.
