Shawnigan-bred Leeroy Stagger returns for concert

Shawnigan Lake-raised singer coming to Vancouver Island for two unique shows

- MIKE DEVLIN

Leeroy Stagger left his native Vancouver Island for good in 2006, but he has hardly been a stranger since his departure. That’s on account of his string of critically acclaimed records, which bring the Lethbridge, Alta.based performer back to Victoria whenever he’s on tour.

The occasion of his 10th and latest album, Dream it All Away, will see the Shawnigan Lake native play two unique shows next week. He will perform for free June 6 at the Brentwood Festival at Pioneer Park (peninsula countrymarket.ca) and the following night at Victoria House Concert B, an intimate, professional small house theatre on Stanley Avenue.

Stagger will be playing songs from Dream it All Away, which arrived May 12 on his own Rebeltone label. The record features a strong list of collaborators, including Jann Arden producer Russell Broom, drummer Pat Steward (Bryan Adams, Odds) and bassist Mike Lent (k.d. lang). The expectation is that it will build on Stagger’s impressive run of recent accomplishments.

In 2013, he opened Chicago shows for Steve Earle, one of his childhood heroes. In 2014, he took home first place in the Prose and Pros category of the Calgary Folk Music Festival’s songwriting contest. Now, Stagger, who turns 32 in October, is cresting on some of the best reviews and radio play — Dream it All Away sits at the top spot on Calgary station CKUA — of his career.

Here’s hoping he goes nowhere other than up. To hear the song, Something Beautiful, visit timescolonist.com/entertainment. For more information, visit leeroystagger.com.
