Have your say, Victoria

- Sandra Richardson is chief executive officer of the Victoria Foundation. SANDRA RICHARDSON

Do you have thoughts on how to handle Victoria’s transportation issues? What’s your opinion of our current housing situation? Is the cost of living in Greater Victoria a concern for you?

A very exciting opportunity to express your views and exercise your democratic rights is currently underway and you are invited to take part.

No, I’m not talking about the federal election, or the ongoing debate about amalgamation, or even the B.C. Ferries contest to name the next ships. I’m referring to the annual Victoria’s Vital Signs survey.

Each year since 2006, residents have been given an opportunity to grade the issues important to quality of life in our region. Results from the survey are then used to create the annual Victoria’s Vital Signs report, released on the first Tuesday in October.

Vital Signs is run by the Victoria Foundation locally, and is part of a nationally co-ordinated program that has been run in more than 40 cities across the nation.

A valuable combination of indicator data and residents’ opinions, the Victoria’s Vital Signs report is used by individuals, businesses, nonprofits, politicians, schools and others to help understand the current state of affairs in the region and take action to make improvements.

The survey and the report look at 12 key issue areas in all, from arts and culture to the economy, from belonging and engagement to safety, learning and more. What results is a comprehensive “checkup” of our region’s liveability.

The survey is an opportunity to add your voice to this important research. Last year, more than 1,700 people took the time to complete the survey and let their opinions be known.

Since opening on May 11, we’ve already had almost 1,000 people submit their views for our 10th anniversary of Vital Signs. Importantly, this year the survey is shorter and easier to take, plus it’s mobilefriendly so you can do it on the go on your phone or tablet.

Everyone’s opinion is important and we want to hear from as many residents as possible. If you have a household with teens or young adults, we especially want to encourage them to participate.

Have your say, Victoria. Take the Vital Signs survey today at our website, victoriafoundation.ca.
