Fall is in the air and as schools are welcoming the return of their students, Goward House is also preparing for the return of its class participan­ts. After a summer hiatus from lessons, Goward House is getting into high gear with many diverse learning opportunit­ies and welcomes adults (aged 50+) to come and learn in a relaxed and fun environmen­t.

SPANISH CLASSES – LEVEL 1

Tuesdays and Fridays,9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Beginning: Sept. 14 This course is for complete beginners and others who have had Spanish in the past but who wish to review what they once learned. Texts and accompanyi­ng CDs can be purchased from the instructor at a cost of $45.

SPANISH CLASSES – INTERMEDIA­TE LEVEL

Fridays,9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., Beginning Sept. 18 This course is for students who completed at least the Level 1 Spanish classes and who are ready to study at a higher level. No text required.

FUNG LOY KOK TAOIST TAI CHI™ – OPEN HOUSE (FREE)

Mon., Sept. 14, 9 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. If you have been curious about Taoist Tai Chi, now is your opportunit­y to drop in and learn about the health benefits, see a live demonstrat­ion, and enjoy compliment­ary coffee or tea on the main floor, following the info session. All are welcome! For those interested in taking up Taoist Tai Chi, Goward House is pleased to offer:

FUNG LOY KOK TAOIST TAI CHI™ – BEGINNERS CLASSES

Tuesdays and Fridays,11 a.m. – noon, Sept. 15 to Nov. 20 When this course is completed, there are two ongoing classes that participan­ts can then join. Goward House is a very pleasant and relaxing place to do Taoist Tai Chi, and many students enjoy a simple lunch in the tea room following their class.

WRITE ON!

Third Monday of each month,1 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Beginning Sept. 21 Are you looking to write your memoirs, enhance your travel journals or begin writing magazine articles? If so, this might be the group you are looking to join. The Write On! participan­ts will meet regularly on the third Monday of each month; each session comprising of an hour for learning and practicing techniques, a 15 min break, and the remaining time to share what you have written and receive feedback. Space is limited to facilitate participat­ion by all.

BRIDGE LESSONS for TRUE BEGINNERS

Thursdays, 2 p.m. – 3:30 p.m., Oct. 15 to Dec. 3 This eight-week course of Audrey Grant’s Bridge Basics are lessons designed for the absolute beginner. Learn the mechanics of the game and the fundamenta­ls of bidding, play and defence. The material is presented in a clear, well-organized format, moving smoothly from one topic to the next. This course is for anyone who wants to enjoy this favourite pastime! Cost: $80 (payable to Goward House) and $15 for textbook (payable to Instructor).

BRIDGE LESSONS – COMMONLY USED CONVENTION­S

Wednesdays, 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Oct. 14 to Dec. 9 (no class Nov. 11) Commonly Used Convention­s is an American Contract Bridge League course covering convention­s that players are likely to encounter in duplicate bridge games. The eight lessons focus on the following topics: • Stayman convention­s • Jacoby transfers • Major-suit openings and responses • Minor-suit openings and responses • Weak Two-bids; and • Strong 2 Club openings. Each lesson will include practical exercises with “cards-on-the-table”. The course is intended for intermedia­te players familiar with the basics of bidding and play, including people returning to bridge after a long absence. Instructor: An accredited ACBL teacher and director of the Goward House Wednesday Duplicate Club.

MAH JONG LESSONS

Mondays, Sept. 21 to Dec. 7 (6 sessions), 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and Mondays – Jan. 4 to March 21 (6 sessions), 10 a.m. – noon The Mah Jong group at Goward House has been active for over 10 years currently offers lessons on how to play. This tile game for four players originated in China and involves skill, strategy, and calculatio­n (as well as a certain degree of luck). You will have lots of fun learning from our experience­d players! Space limited. Register early to avoid disappoint­ment! Cost: $60 (includes membership to Goward House – expiry Dec 31, 2016)
