The Canucks Autism Network (CAN) provides year-round, high-quality sports, recreation­al, arts, and social programs for individual­s and families living with autism, while spreading awareness and providing training in communitie­s across British Columbia. The CAN team consists of a diverse group of trained staff, experience­d support workers and dedicated volunteers who administer programs for families and individual­s living with autism. Over the weekend of July 16-17, CAN will hold a multisport weekend day camp at Shawnigan Lake School. Up to 30 children and teens with autism, ages five to 16, will rotate through soccer, football, softball and other summer activities. CAN is looking for enthusiast­ic, energetic volunteers to play along with the kids, role-model proper participat­ion and help engage each participan­t. Opportunit­ies for carpooling with staff from Victoria and Nanaimo will be available. If you’re 16 or older, please email volunteer@canucksaut­ism.ca if you are interested!

Internatio­nal Youth Camp Leader: CISV Victoria (formerly Children’s Internatio­nal Summer Villages), the local chapter of an internatio­nal volunteer organizati­on that helps develop leadership skills, multicultu­ral awareness & global friendship­s for ages 11 through adulthood), has an opportunit­y for a volunteer to lead a delegation of four youths to an internatio­nal camp in Queretero, Mexico, this summer (July 7-Aug 11). Media Column Writer-Editor: Do you enjoy writing? Are you interested in helping community organizati­ons recruit the volunteers they need to support their valuable work? Then this volunteer position may be for you. Volunteer Victoria seeks a writer-editor to put together its weekly media column that appears in numerous local media sources. Commitment is about 2.5 hours per week and you can work from home, or come into our office at Volunteer Victoria. Mentors: Everyone needs someone to laugh with, to share a dream with and to just hang out with. Big Brothers Big Sisters Victoria seeks adult volunteers to be matched with a child between ages seven and 17, and spend a few hours a week together out in the community. Mentors and mentees are matched based on common interests, schedules, etc. The commitment is two to four hours per week for at least a year. Strawberry and Ice Cream Servers: The Saanich Strawberry Festival celebrates 50 years this year! District of Saanich Recreation is looking for a number of fairly strong folk to scoop hundreds of servings of ice cream on July 10 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at Elk Beaver Lake Park.
