VOLUNTEERING
The Canucks Autism Network (CAN) provides year-round, high-quality sports, recreational, arts, and social programs for individuals and families living with autism, while spreading awareness and providing training in communities across British Columbia. The CAN team consists of a diverse group of trained staff, experienced support workers and dedicated volunteers who administer programs for families and individuals living with autism. Over the weekend of July 16-17, CAN will hold a multisport weekend day camp at Shawnigan Lake School. Up to 30 children and teens with autism, ages five to 16, will rotate through soccer, football, softball and other summer activities. CAN is looking for enthusiastic, energetic volunteers to play along with the kids, role-model proper participation and help engage each participant. Opportunities for carpooling with staff from Victoria and Nanaimo will be available. If you’re 16 or older, please email volunteer@canucksautism.ca if you are interested!

International Youth Camp Leader: CISV Victoria (formerly Children’s International Summer Villages), the local chapter of an international volunteer organization that helps develop leadership skills, multicultural awareness & global friendships for ages 11 through adulthood), has an opportunity for a volunteer to lead a delegation of four youths to an international camp in Queretero, Mexico, this summer (July 7-Aug 11). Media Column Writer-Editor: Do you enjoy writing? Are you interested in helping community organizations recruit the volunteers they need to support their valuable work? Then this volunteer position may be for you. Volunteer Victoria seeks a writer-editor to put together its weekly media column that appears in numerous local media sources. Commitment is about 2.5 hours per week and you can work from home, or come into our office at Volunteer Victoria. You will be supported, valued and engaged in a very meaningful volunteer opportunity. Mentors: Everyone needs someone to laugh with, to share a dream with and to just hang out with. Big Brothers Big Sisters Victoria seeks adult volunteers to be matched with a child between ages seven and 17, and spend a few hours a week together out in the community. Mentors and mentees are matched based on common interests, schedules, etc. The commitment is two to four hours per week for at least a year. Strawberry and Ice Cream Servers: The Saanich Strawberry Festival celebrates 50 years this year! District of Saanich Recreation is looking for a number of fairly strong folk to scoop hundreds of servings of ice cream on July 10 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at Elk Beaver Lake Park.
