Filming of new Bon Cop set to start

- NATHALIE LAFLAMME

MONTREAL — Ten years after the release of the record-breaking bilingual Bon Cop Bad Cop, shooting for the sequel is about to begin, with star Colm Feore saying the comedy will be “big-lier” than its predecessor.

Filming is set to begin May 22 and last 39 days, mainly in Montreal and in the Eastern Townships.

Back for more bilingual mayhem in Bon Cop Bad Cop 2 will be Feore and Patrick Huard as cops Martin Ward and David Bouchard respectively.

“I think we can say we’re going to do it ‘bigly,’ in the words of Donald Trump,” Feore told a news conference in Montreal on Monday. “It’s going to be ‘big-lier’ than we ever did it before. And I’m delighted that we’re doing it here in Montreal.”

Huard added that if Trump, who is shooting for the U.S. presidency, sees the movie, he will “probably want to build a wall across the border.”

Huard, who wrote the screenplay, has had the idea for the sequel for nine years. He said Bon Cop Bad Cop 2 will be something new for Quebec and Canadian film, “something with more ambition.”

“We set up the same challenge for [ourselves] for the sequel, so it’s going to be bigger, it’s going to have a lot more action,” said Huard. “It’s really ambitious, and I hope we’re going to pull it off.”

Director Alain Des-Rochers said the biggest difference between the first instalment and the sequel will be the fact Bouchard and Ward already know each other, so their relationship will be more than just a love-hate one.

Des-Rochers said the audience can look forward to more jokes, more car chases and more explosions. “For a director, tackling a film as anticipated as this one is a major challenge — and one that I am very eager to take on,” he said.

In Bon Cop Bad Cop 2, Quebecer Bouchard and Ontarian Ward once again have to work together — this time to put an end to a ring involved in stealing cars. They soon discover the ring is a front for something much, much worse.

The dynamic between the duo will have changed, as Bouchard will be under Ward’s command, with Feore’s character now a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer. The film’s antagonist will be American.

Other Canadian actors in the film include Lucie Laurier, Sarah-Jeanne Labrosse, Mariana Mazza and Marc Beaupre.

Bon Cop Bad Cop was released in 2006 and saw the two cops working together to solve a murder when the victim is found on the Quebec-Ontario border.

The film earned $12 million at the box office, making it what its production team called the most successful Canadian film in history.

Bon Cop Bad Cop 2 is set to be released in the summer of 2017.
