Shamrocks bring back veteran Shattler

The Victoria Shamrocks announced Monday that Jeff Shattler will be returning to the Western Lacrosse Associatio­n team this season following a twoyear absence.

Shattler, 31, played for the Shamrocks for five seasons between 2009 and 2013. He was twice named team MVP.

Shattler played the last two seasons in Ontario with the Six Nations Chiefs and helped lead the Chiefs to a Mann Cup championsh­ip over the Shamrocks in 2014. In nine seasons of Senior A lacrosse, he has scored 348 goals and added 482 assists for 830 points in 251 regular season and playoff games, and is considered one of the top transition players in the sport.

“Jeff brings the total package,” said Shamrocks GM Chris Welch.

Meanwhile, the Mann Cup will be on display today from noon to 1 p.m. at Centennial Square before it heads back to the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Shamrocks players will be on hand for pictures and autographs.

The 2015 Mann Cup champion Shamrocks open the 2016 WLA season Friday with the Island derby against Nanaimo Timbermen at The Q Centre.
