Casino not welcome in Gorge Tillicum

-

Re: “Uptown, Tillicum eyed for casino,” June 11.

A few years ago, a proposal to put a new casino in the Burnside Gorge area was defeated. Now we have another proposal to put one in the Gorge Tillicum area, which, I hope, will also be turned down.

Some of the most important factors in placing casinos in neighbourhoods are the importance of a comprehensive socialimpact study, the increase in crime and undesirable activities, and the message it sends, particularly to our youth, that gambling is a socially acceptable activity. There are examples of family breakdowns and violence caused by problem gambling, and cases where gamblers who have been barred from casinos have been able to reenter and continue to gamble. The Gorge Tillicum neighbourhood has many social and economic problems without adding another one to the mix.

Why do we always see these facilities promoted in less-affluent areas? Is it because the proponents think that there will be less public opposition?

Saanich Mayor Richard Atwell seems to think the economic benefits will be good for municipal coffers, but I believe the negative aspects far outweigh any positives.

The casino in View Royal has permits to expand by adding a new theatre and restaurant, but those plans are on hold until a decision has been made on adding another one in Saanich or Victoria. That plan seems to be the most logical, as one larger facility in the same location is more acceptable than adding another that is not needed or welcome in the community.
