Bring in mandatory earthquake insurance

-

Re: “Quake insurance causes aftershocks,” column, Oct. 15.

I couldn’t agree with Les Leyne more. Earthquake insurance accounts for close to half of my yearly house-insurance bill.

Given that more and more people are opting out of carrying this kind of insurance and given the fact that, sooner or later, the big one will hit, why not adopt a more proactive approach to this problem? If B.C. were to set-up a mandatory, not-forprofit earthquake-insurance corporation that all landowners had to participate in, we would all have some degree of hope of repairing or rebuilding our homes when the big one occurs.

As it is, most people with insurance will not be well covered and those without will no doubt be looking to government for assistance of some kind.

So why not take the bull by the horns and start to self-insure? With luck, we might have as much as 300 years before the big one arrives.
