An American man who used a false identity to work as a nurse in Victoria has pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography.

The plea comes after two-year-plus investigation that spanned two countries and involved what one Victoria police investigator described as one of the most extensive collections of child porn the officer had ever seen.

The investigation started in late June 2014, after VicPD’s Internet Child Exploitation unit focused on David Stallcup, who was going by the pseudonym David Robert.

The investigator noted that within a 16-day period, more than 350 child pornography files were shared, said Victoria police spokesman Const. Matt Rutherford.

On March 10, 2015, Victoria police searched a home in the 700-block of Fisgard Street where more than 20 pieces of evidence were seized. Stallcup was spoken to during the search but could not be arrested until investigators had a chance to examine the evidence.

Police found 775 videos with 139 hours of tape and more than 27,000 images, all confirmed to be child pornography.

A month later, an arrest warrant was issued for Stallcup. In June 2015, investigators learned that Stallcup was using a fake name, David Robert, while he was in Canada.

Police discovered he was in an Oregon jail and that for 14 years, Stallcup had been evading police on outstanding charges in the U.S., creating fake identities along the way.

Stallcup had been using the name David Robert since 2001. Under this name, he was able to obtain a registered nurse certification in the Northwest Territories and worked at a facility as a nurse in Victoria.

Victoria police and Island Health would not say where Stallcup worked.

Over a 20-year period, Stallcup, under various aliases, was traced from Colorado to Alaska to Montana to the Northwest Territories then to Victoria.

Due to the seriousness of the offences in Victoria, the Internet Child Exploitation unit worked with authorities in the U.S. to have Stallcup extradited to Canada on Nov. 16, 2016, where he was arrested and transferred to Victoria.

On Jan. 18, the 42-year-old pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography and he remains in custody until his sentencing hearing.
