UVic Vikes’ Rowe wins individual title in Nevada

Lawren Rowe, ranked No. 4 among Canada’s top amateur men’s golfers and 173rd in the world, continues to shine for the University of Victoria Vikes’ team.

Rowe took top individual honours at the Battle at Primm taking place at the Primm Valley Golf Club, near Las Vegas in Nevada.

Rowe finished with an 11-under 205 total after recording rounds of 69, 67 and 69 on the par72 course, three shots better than runner-up Andrew Williamson of Wayland Baptist.

The Vikes finished eighth in the men’s team competition, while the women placed sixth as a group.

It was Rowe’s third victory this season as the third-year Victoria native and Mount Douglas grad continues to shine near the top of the individual National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics rankings. His second round 67 propelled him into the lead and he never relinquished it.

Teammates Jacob Hayes (73-76-73) and Mike Griffin (72-75-78) finished 34th and 46th among the men, respectively.

In women’s play, the Vikes were led by Nicole Gargarella (80-75), Rhiannon Jones (82-74) and Laura Ferreira (82-79), who finished tied for 18th, tied for 22nd and tied for 35th, respectively, as individuals. UVic enjoyed a strong second day to move into sixth as a team.

Kat Kennedy of UBC won the individual women’s event with rounds of 74-67 for a total 141. The UBC Thunderbirds finished fourth as a team.
