From dispatcher to fire chief

Karen Fry, who began her career with Nanaimo Fire Rescue in 1999 as a dispatcher, is the department’s new fire chief.

She takes over from Craig Richardson, who retired in the spring.

“It’s an honour to receive the support that led to this appointment,” Fry said in a statement.

“As chief I will continue to carry out council’s strategic direction while ensuring that Nanaimo Fire remains a leader in the fire service.”

She said her priorities include implementing the city’s new fire plan, making residents aware of fire risks, and supporting employees exposed to trauma.

“Under my leadership, be prepared to see our incredible fighters out in the public and engaging the community more,” said Fry, who was deputy chief and acting chief before being named to her new position. “They will take on opportunities to provide fire-safety education, install free smoke alarms and teach bystander CPR and emergency planning.”

Fry studied business and liberal studies at Simon Fraser University and has completed leadership courses through the Municipal Administration Training Institute.

Tracy Samra, Nanaimo’s chief administrative officer, said Fry’s work as a deputy chief stood out and her “firm but fair” method of problem solving earned her respect within the department. The city is “happy to have found the right fire chief for our department and our organization,” she said.
