Stolen scooter replaced with another

Victoria woman ‘thrilled’ by help from businessman

- KATIE DeROSA

A Sidney businessman has helped a Victoria woman with a disability replace a mobility scooter that was stolen last month.

John McCann read about a woman whose scooter was stolen from the locked parking area of her apartment building in the 900 block of Balmoral Road.

She uses a scooter to get to medical appointments, run errands and buy groceries.

“First, I thought it was a horrible crime stealing somebody’s wheels. It’s about as low as you can go,” said McCann, a 67-yearold businessman.

“I thought she was probably trapped.”

McCann contacted Victoria police and said he wanted to help the woman.

He was put in touch with her and offered to replace the scooter.

She said all she needed was the $500 deductible for her insurance to cover the loss.

“She was thrilled,” McCann said. “She was really relieved.” The woman sent him a handmade thank-you card.

Victoria Police Chief Del Manak said he is thankful for McCann’s generosity.

“When a member of our wider community steps up to help out someone who has been victimized by a thoughtless crime like this, it warms the heart,” Manak said.

The woman’s scooter is still missing. It is described as a red, three-wheel Shoprider mobility scooter with a black seat, grey wheels and a blue “Victoria Blue Bash” sticker on the console.

Anyone with information on the theft is asked to call Victoria police at 250-995-7654 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
