Hall of fame has many nominations

-

Re: “Two sailors deserve to be in hall of fame,” letter, Nov. 1. I’m sure there are many people disappointed each year that their favourite athlete, team, coach or builder has not yet been inducted into the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame.

Although we have more than 100 active files and receive an additional 12 to 15 nominations annually, we induct only a maximum of nine new members each year. As you can see, there is quite a waiting list and it is rare for anyone to be inducted in their first year of nomination.

One of the basic criteria for induction is that athletes must be retired from the top tier of competition for at least three years, with the only exception being masterscategory athletes.

All of the nomination criteria, along with the nomination form, can be found on our website: gvshof.ca. Simply click on the “Inductees” tab and then the relevant item. You will also find all instructions for submitting a nomination. Nominations close each year on Feb. 28 and we are always pleased to receive new nominations from the public.

With more than 200 athletes, teams and builders in the Sports Hall of Fame, we continue to celebrate Victoria’s stellar sports history. Our sport history lives through our displays on the concourse level of the Saveon-Foods Memorial Centre, with free entry weekdays through Gate Three. Robert Hope, president Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame
