Painting for relaxation and fun

Practicing and exploring your creativity has both cognitive and emotional benefits for seniors. Learning something new and expanding your skills can get your neurons or brain cells firing as well as release cortisol, the harmful hormone that is produced under stress. If you add in socializing and laughter in group classes with experienced instructors, the positive benefits are plentiful.

The Victoria Centre of Silver Threads Service is hosting two different creative workshops in November. On Thursday, Nov. 16, our first-ever Ladies

Paint Night will run from 4 to 6 p.m. and is one of easiest ways to start creating. Bring your girlfriends, enjoy appetizers and refreshments, and experience this step by step facilitated class as you are led through the process. While we all work on the same design, each participant will create a one-of-a-kind painting. Cost is $5.25 for members and $7.35 for non-members.

For the more serious artist, consider trying the Chinese Brush Painting Workshop with renowned artist, Andy Lou. This workshop is designed for people who are interested in oriental painting media. Topics include Chinese ink, rice paper, colour, texture, composition and the aesthetic principles of Chinese brush painting. Try your hand at loading the brush with ink and water, dry and wet brush strokes and more.

Join us Thursday, Nov. 23 from noon to 4 p.m. Cost: $55 for members and $65 for non-members.
