MORE FUN THAN A BARREL OF MONKEYS

- by Karin Geppert Goward House Volunteer

Oh, hi there! We’ve been looking all over for you and finally we found you! We would like you to come and join us in our two craft groups: Monday Morning Paper Quilling and

Wednesday Afternoon Crafters. I can tell you from personal experience that both of these groups enjoying laughing and creating together.

Five to six years ago and newly retired, I was looking for a fun thing to do. I found an article in the Times

Colonist about a Wednesday Afternoon Crafters at Goward House. The picture of the Raggedy Ann dolls which accompanied the article intrigued me. I asked a friend to go with me to check it out. Together we ventured forth and never looked back.

Every Wednesday afternoon, our small, informal group gets together to knit, sew, crochet and embroider. We create all kinds of different things. Our project materials are mostly donated by Goward House members and the general public, for which we are very rateful. There is never a deadline to finish a project which is a good thing because we do a lot of chatting and laughing between stiches.

Each craft item is handmade with that special ingredient: tender loving care. In past years, the Raggedy Ann dolls were a much sought-after item. Our Sock Monkeys proved to be just as popular in recent years as well. Despite the fact that we work for bananas, we enjoy our time together. With all the giggling spilling from the craft room, it is clear that our group runs on fun. Quite possibly, more fun than a barrel of monkeys!

Special presenters attend our craft group to teach us new crafting skills. We’ve had instruction on doll-making, crocheting an infinite scarf, and even paper quilling. This proved to be so popular that we now have a Monday morning group practicing the art of paper quilling.

Using thin and colourful strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together, the Monday Morning Paper Quilling group creates decorative designs such as flowers, birds, hearts, insects, snowflakes and ornaments.

These creations are then glued onto card stock to make beautiful greeting cards.

The items we make are available for purchase (at a very reasonable price) at the Goward House Society’s annual Christmas Craft Fair, which takes place on the third weekend of November each year. Proceeds directly benefit the Goward House Society (non-profit) to either improve programming or enhance the beauty of its already warm and welcoming environment.

The two craft groups are always open to welcoming new members. Why not join us in making lovely craft items and in making some new friends. Come and check us out – I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

The Goward House Society invites you to drop in and see all it has to offer any weekday (Monday to Friday) between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. You are welcome to participate in any activity, one time without commitment, to see if that particular activity is a good fit for you. Feel free to bring a friend.

Goward House Society is a non-profit organization that operates as an adult activity centre for those aged 50+. gowardhouse.com
