Holiday to-do list: Start checking off
My friend’s mom used to remark quizzically that she could not understand why everyone got so rushed and panicky about Christmas. “Every year, it’s the same date, there’s no surprise,” she said, shaking her head at her frenzied daughters as they scrambled bleary-eyed through last-minute shopping and baking. Well, there are those who learn from past mistakes and allow lots of time to prepare. And then the other group, who somehow convince themselves that the holiday angel will sweep down and allot extra free catchup days. While my friend waits for the angel — me, I’m a planner.
With my family living all over the globe, our holiday arrangements must be made months ahead, in order for us to be together. When December rolls around, I am ready to make final preparations. Here’s my checklist so when we are all together, we can enjoy each other’s company.
One month to go. With guests coming, could the powder room use a bit of sprucing up? These are small spaces, so not much labour, and you can make a big impression with a bold new paint colour or trendy oversize mural. If you don’t have it in you to paint or paper, how about fresh towels? A new shade will update your room without any other changes. Then add some special soaps and lotions. And a seasonal candle. Nothing says welcome like a little pampering.
Whether you have a separate guest room or a pull-out couch in the den, invest in new bed linens. Make room in a closet and dresser for your guests to unpack. Also, pay attention to your entrance hall. It’s winter, so extra space is required for coats and boots. A sturdy coat rack or a row of coat hooks will take care of the company. A small storage bench is also handy for extras, and offers a place to perch while pulling on or off shoes and boots.
Three weeks to go. How will you decorate the house? Check out stores and online sites for inspiration. Pull together your decorations for Christmas trees inside and out, wreathes, lights, real or faux greenery. Work within a theme that will integrate your home’s holiday glitter. Combine what you have with a splash of new ornaments and a dazzle of metallic accents. Window wreaths and monotone or heritage trees are favourites.
Two weeks to go. Time to do an inventory check on kitchen supplies, china and silverware. Tableware for entertaining is most fun when it is mix and match. Place every-day crockery beside some splendid fine china. Pull out the silver you got from your granny and give it a good shine. One less thing to think about on feast day.
Have a “me” day. You are organized, you deserve it. Shop for a holiday outfit, spend a few hours at a spa.
Choose holiday baking that can be done ahead of time and sealed or frozen. Set aside a weekend to make your special family recipes. Shop for ingredients and enlist helpers to join you in the kitchen. This can be combined with decorating the house.
With just a few days to go, write up your grocery lists, and beverage requirements.
Make sure you have wrapping paper for last-minute gifts. Finally, remember that what doesn’t get done, probably doesn’t matter. A relaxed and happy host is the best gift you can give your guests.
