Highlanders go with ‘bold but simplistic’ logo

- CLEVE DHEENSAW

With a new ownership group comes a new logo this season for the Victoria Highlanders of the United Soccer League’s Premier Development League.

The new logo incorporates a distinctive shield shape and is inspired by the crest of Victoria, a maple leaf and initials VH for Victoria Highlanders.

It is hoped the new brand will lead to an improved merchandise line for fans, said the club.

The logo was developed by noted American graphic designer Matthew Wolff. Previous Wolff projects include the creation of the visual identities for New York City FC and Los Angeles FC of Major League Soccer.

“Our ownership group are excited to have worked with Matthew on this project,” said Highlanders co-owner Mark deFrias, in a statement.

“We had a very specific vision. We wanted to represent our colours, city and country boldly but keeping a simplistic approach.”

The Highlanders new ownership group includes Victoria businessmen deFrias, Brett Large, Moreno Stefani, Grant Olsen and Ryan Wilson. Previous owners, Marvin Diercks and David Dew, also remain as part of the club’s new ownership group.

The Highlanders open the 2018 PDL season May 11 in Calgary against the Foothills. The first home game is May 20 against Portland Timbers U-23 at Centennial Stadium.
