Tubb conquers all at assistants championship
Oliver Tubb is back on top of the PGA of B.C. assistants world. The University Golf Club pro edged former champion Brad Clapp on the third playoff hole on the Mountain Course at Bear Mountain on Tuesday to claim his third PGA of B.C. Assistants Championship.
Tubb, who previously won PGA of B.C. Assistants titles in 2014 and 2016, was the only player in the field of 70 to shoot two sub-70 rounds, finishing with a 69 and 68 to claim the winner’s cheque of $3,000.
“This was hard work,” Tubb said in a statement. “Five-underpar at this golf course for two days with wind was pretty special, so I’m proud of that and thrilled to get the win.”
Tubb birdied each of his last two holes to force the playoff with Clapp, who plays out of Chilliwack Golf Club and shot a final-round 65. Tubb also had to fend off Kevin Stinson of Cheam Mountain, who held a share of the lead on the back nine on Tuesday before falling back into a tie for third with Conner Kozak of Okanagan Golf Club. Defending champion Bryn Parry of Point Grey finished in fifth place, while Victoria Golf Club’s Mark Bicknell was the top Islander, finishing in ninth with rounds of 72 and 74.
In the PGA of B.C. Seniors’ Championship, played at the same time, Norm Jarvis of Nico Wynd Golf Course earned a four-shot victory thanks to a final-round 72. Philip Jonas was runner-up. Jim Goddard of Cordova Bay was third.
Hyashi, Koira in a zone at Cedar Hill
Akari Hyashi and Cindy Koira punched their tickets to the B.C. Junior Girls Golf Championship next month, thanks to some stellar play at last weekend’s Zone 5 Junior Girls Championship at Cedar Hill.
Hyashi, of Uplands, won by two strokes over Koira, who plays out of Victoria Golf Club, thanks to round of 72 and 71. Koira shot a 1-over 68 on Saturday but fell back on Sunday.
In the Net competition, Chelsea Truong of Victoria Golf Club was victorious by six strokes over Georgie Alexander.
The B.C. Junior Girls Championship runs July 3-5 in Kamloops.
Hamilton joins Hall of Fame board
The Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame has added a well-known name to its board of directors.
The Hall announced this week that Clint Hamilton, director of athletics and recreation at the University of Victoria, has come on board as a director.
A UVic alumnus, Hamilton has helped launch successful initiatives such as the Vikes Championship Breakfast, the opening of CARSA and the Walk of Excellence.
The other board members include president Doug Jennings, Robert Hope, Rick Leggett, Chris Graham, Tom Turnbull, Dave Erb, Lois Smith, Robert Bettauer, Cal Mackay, Fern Johnson, Louise Hodgson-Jones, Jim Swanson and Stacie Louttit.
Okell right on track at Laguna Seca
Victoria race car driver Bill Okell took a break from his usual spot on the Sports Car Club of America Western Conference championship series to take part in the SCCA’s NASPORT series stop at Laguna Seca Raceway near Monterey, California, and it was a good thing he did.
Despite suffering some mechanical issues to his 1964 MGB, Okell was victorious in both weekend races, including posting the fastest lap of Sunday’s feature race.
Okell returns to the Western Conference series this month at Sonoma Raceway Park near San Francisco where the final two of the 14-event series will take place.
