Say ‘thanks’ to Dad

- BY SUSAN SIMOSKO PRESIDENT, SIDNEY BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT AREA SOCIETY

Did you know that Father’s Day is celebrated around the globe? It’s not always in June, however. In Australia, for example, it’s celebrated in September, but the sentiment remains the same. It’s a day-long opportunity to say thank you to dads everywhere for all they do to enrich and sustain us throughout our lives.

My dad has been gone almost 20 years but not a day goes by that I don’t think of him and quietly express gratitude for all he gave me: the courage to be myself and to take a fish off the line, compassion for people of all persuasions and interests, and a love of books, music and fitness. He also spurred my curiosity, encouraged me to learn as a matter of course, and to try to deal with difficulties and disappointments with tolerance and a sense of humour. He was a great dad! Was he perfect and did we agree on everything? Definitely not, but he was always there for me, and I looked forward to Father’s Day as a special occasion to say thank you and share a bit of time, fun and love with him. This June, take a few minutes to think about the ways your dad or that special man in your life makes a difference to you. Then consider how best to say thank you. Maybe you’ll decide to spend time with him doing what he enjoys most, or prepare a special meal, plan an outing, or purchase a thoughtful gift. In Sidney and on the Peninsula, the options are many. Consider just a few:

Experiences

Fish or crab off Sidney pier, walk the waterfront, cycle the Flight Path, share a libation at a local pub, delight in a meal or coffee with a tasty snack at one of Sidney’s many cafés or restaurants, enjoy a tour and tasting at Victoria Distillers, and take in the beautiful Salish Sea against the back drop of Mt. Baker and the Gulf Islands – beautiful.

Prepare a special meal

Sidney has three great grocery stores and numerous specialty shops for all the fixin’s for a wonderful meal with first-rate food prep advice, too. Sidney shops offer an excellent selection of kitchenware: Check out Muffet and Louisa’s, Lilaberry, Capital Iron and Home Hardware.

Personalized gift

“Every new project requires a new tool,” right? If that’s your dad’s sentiment, too, visit Dig This, Lordo Auto Parts, Capital Iron, Home Hardware, or one of Sidney’s many other shops to get what your dad wants for his latest home or gardening project.

Or what about…

• A special photograph of one of your favourite pics, printed and framed at Bowlin Photo

• Camping or sports gear from Capital Iron, Home Hardware or Hypersport •

Men’s wear at Sidney Casual, Mark’s, or d.g. bremner & co.

All good choices

Regardless of what you decide, make sure that your dad knows how much you appreciate him and all he does to light up your life and help you to learn and understand the world.
