In Nanaimo, watchdog probes death of suspected impaired driver
The Independent Investigations Office is investigating after the death of a suspected impaired driver in Nanaimo.
Nanaimo RCMP were called about a possible impaired driver about 1:15 a.m. Sunday.
The driver appeared so intoxicated that officers called B.C. Ambulance paramedics to take him to hospital.
Before paramedics arrived, the man went into medical distress and officers administered first aid.
The man was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition but later died.
The civilian police watchdog, which probes police-involved deaths and serious injuries, will investigate whether the death was related to the actions or inactions of the officers involved.
