Why: Two of the finest singersongwriters with roots in the B.C. area are paired for a superb showcase at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church on Saturday night. Both give the folk tradition a modern twist, and have a skilful way of looking at the world through song. Fogale is touring behind his debut, Safety, while Edel, who spent nearly a decade in Victoria before moving to Washington state, is buzzing off his new release, Challenger. A towering twin bill.
COUNTRY
What: Washboard Union with Nice Horse
Where: Bodine Hall in the Mary Winspear Centre, 2243 Beacon Ave., Sidney
When: Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. (doors at 7)
Tickets: $60.90 at the Mary Winspear box office (250-656-0275) or tickets.marywinspear.ca
Why: These Vancouver favourites technically fall under the country-music banner, but their sound is different from the radio-friendly fare coming out of the U.S. That’s a good thing if you’re after classic-sounding bluegrass and country reminiscent of the Zac Brown Band, because the sweet-singing trio of Aaron Grain, Chris Duncombe and David Roberts has it by the pound. Fans seeing these three-time Canadian Country Music Award winners are in for a treat next week.
