Mount Doug presses ahead, Belmont falls

-

The Mount Douglas Rams led the New Westminster Hyacks 35-18 in the fourth quarter Saturday of the provincial high school Triple-A football championship game at B.C. Place.

The game was in progress at press time.

Mount Douglas was after its fifth B.C. title in school history, but first since the Rams won four championships in five seasons between 2011 and 2015 under head coach Mark Townsend.

The Hyacks, coached by TSN broadcaster Farhan Lalji, were the defending B.C. champions after winning the first title in school history last season.

Meanwhile, the Belmont Bulldogs were defeated 37-12 by the Kelowna Owls in the B.C. junior high school football championship game, also under the dome. The Bulldogs went to the final undefeated on the season.

VOLLEYBALL: Belmont was denied the three-peat in girls’ high school Quad-A when the two-time defending champion Bulldogs were defeated in the B.C. final on Saturday by Kelowna.

“We fought extremely hard right to the end,” said Belmont head coach Mike Toakley, whose squad beat Lord Tweedsmuir of Surrey in the semifinals.

“It will probably take awhile for the players to feel a bit better about it. But two golds and a silver in three consecutive years is pretty special.”

SOCCER: Oak Bay and the Reynolds Roadrunners meet in the Colonist Cup boys’ Lower Island final at 3:40 p.m. Monday at the Oak Bay Secondary pitch.
