Why it matters: giving the right business address

- SUBMITTED BY CONSUMER PROTECTION BC

C onsumer Protection BC is responsible for licensing and regulating certain industries in B.C. such as payday lenders, travel agencies, funeral providers and more. As part of the province’s consumer protection law, licensed businesses ensure they provide Consumer Protection BC with correct business addresses. Why does this matter?

THE LAW

The law says that licensed businesses must provide Consumer Protection BC with an up-to-date address. Businesses also must report a change of address within 14 days.

WHY THIS MATTERS TO CONSUMERS

1. Consumers will know where to find them. When their location is accurate, people know where to go if there’s a problem or if they have a question for the business. 2. Basic exchange of information can take place. Cheques can be sent and received, and basic administrative tasks can be completed. 3. Helps ensure the business is operating within the law. When Consumer Protection BC knows where the business is located, they are able to perform inspections and help businesses understand what they need to do to follow the law. Consumer Protection BC can identify any serious infractions that put consumers at risk.
