CRITIC’S PICKS
MUSICAL COMEDY
What: Andre-Philippe Gagnon
Where: Charlie White Theatre, 2243 Beacon Ave., Sidney
When: Wednesday, March 27, and Thursday, March 28, 7:30 p.m.
Tickets: $73.50 from tickets.marywinspear.ca or 250-656-0275
Why: Tickets are quickly becoming scarce for the upcoming twonight stand from Andre-Philippe Gagnon, who brings his unique brand of musical comedy to Sidney’s Charlie White Theatre next week. The popular impressionist has a new show, The History of Rock and Roll, which is sure to include some of the French-Canadian funnyman’s iconic impressions, including old-schoolers such as Mick Jagger and Louis Armstrong, along with new recruits such as Pharrell Williams and Bruno Mars.
CLASSICAL
What: Martin Stadtfeld
Where: Alix Goolden Performance Hall, 907 Pandora Ave.
When: Saturday, 7 p.m. (doors at 6)
Tickets: $90 ($60 for students) from the Victoria Conservatory of Music box office (900 Johnson St., 250-386-5311) or online from ticketfly.com
Why: Germany’s Martin Stadtfeld — who was a concert pianist at the age of nine — will make his Victoria debut during a rare Canadian appearance with the music that made him famous. The acclaimed 29-year-old pianist will perform several pieces in tribute to Johann Sebastian Bach, in addition to Franz Schubert’s Sonata in B Flat Major. All profits from the performance will be donated to the Victoria Conservatory of Music.
HIP-HOP
What: Tech N9ne with Krizz Kaliko
Where: Capital Ballroom, 858 Yates St.
When: Sunday, 9 p.m. (doors at 8)
Tickets: $45 at ticketweb.ca; $50 at the door
Why: Collaborations with everyone from Eminem and Kendrick Lamar to Machine Gun Kelly and Gary Clark Jr. have turned Kansas City rapper Aaron Yates into one of the most successful independent artists in North America. He plays Victoria fairly regularly, and almost every local appearance sells out come showtime. Fans can expect a high-calibre show when Tech N9ne performs Sunday in support of Planet, his latest album to reach No. 1 on Billboard’s U.S. Independent Albums chart.
