Trees as priceless as Notre Dame

Last month, Paris’s Notre Dame Cathedral caught fire. The grief of Parisians, denizens of the great culture capital, home of the ancient Gothic cathedral, with its renowned “forest of lattice work” and flying buttresses, was shared by people around the world, who watched in horror as 400 firefighters formed a human chain, risking their lives to save the beloved building and its priceless artifacts.

During the following days, headlines depicted a global sigh of relief in discovering that while there was significant damage, all was not lost, including the cathedral’s famous rooftop honey bees.

“We will rebuild!” President Emmanuel Macron declared, as the country’s wealthiest pledged hundreds of millions.

Recently, here in a great nature capital, a letter-writing campaign forced only the “postponement” of the logging of 109 hectares of worldrenowned ancient forest, the importance of which cannot be overstated. Similar to Notre Dame Cathedral, our trees are priceless. The difference is, we cannot rebuild. Karin Dayton Victoria
