Police hope video sheds light on stabbing
West Shore RCMP have released surveillance video from a June 26 incident that sent a youth to hospital with stab wounds.
The aggravated assault on the grounds of Ruth King Elementary School was made public immediately after it happened, and the investigation by the RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit is ongoing.
Students and staff arrived at their Jacklin Road school the next day to find part of the grounds still behind police tape.
Police hope the video will generate more information about the altercation, which involved two groups of young people.
It’s believed the two groups were walking along Goldstream Avenue between Peatt and Matson roads when they encountered each other between 8 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.
One of the groups is shown in the video.
Police noted that two of the five males in the group have all-black clothing, one has a black, long-sleeve shirt with blue shorts and white runners, one has dyed blond hair and is wearing a red T-shirt with white writing and darkcoloured shorts, and one has a longsleeve dark grey/green shirt, black shorts with white stripes and white runners.
The assault came during a period when police said they were dealing with a large amount of calls linked to chronic youth offenders ages 12 to 19.
The calls involved such offences as breaking-and-entering and mischief.
West Shore RCMP Const. Don McIntosh said in June that police focus on working with at-risk youth, and that most of those they deal with have had more than 20 interactions with police.
A community meeting was organized at the time to discuss youth offenders.
