Housing society opens on Peninsula

-

The Greater Victoria Housing Society officially opened its first building on the Saanich Peninsula on Friday.

The Parsons at Brentwood has 40 units of affordable housing for seniors and people in the workforce.

“These homes will assist seniors and those working locally as well as adults with disabilities,” said Central Saanich Mayor Ryan Windsor. “We know that finding affordable rental housing in the region is extremely difficult and Central Saanich is working to provide a diversity of housing options, including rental units.”

The project, at 7247 West Saanich Rd., was supported through grants and loans from B.C. Housing, the federal government, VanCity credit union and the District of Central Saanich.

It has 20 studio units, 18 one-bedroom units and two accessible units.

The total cost of land and construction for the 24,000-square-foot building was $9.723 million.

The building is named after long-time Central Saanich resident Peter Parsons, who died in 2007 and was an active volunteer in the community. Architect Joe Newell designed the building and the contractor was Kinetic Construction.
