Dog fatally shot after attacking Manitoba police dog

-

STEINBACH, MANITOBA — RCMP in Manitoba say a dog that attacked a police dog when officers were searching a rural property was fatally shot.

Police say in a news release that members of the Steinbach detachment executed a search warrant in the Rural Municipality of Hanover on Friday morning as part of a stolen property investigation.

They say that as the officers approached a building, a dog weighing about 40 kg attacked a police service dog named Mack.

The officers attempted to pry the attacking dog off of Mack, the release says, but couldn’t, and so it was shot it in order to protect Mack and the officers.

Mack was taken to a veterinarian for non-life threatening injuries to his face and shoulder, while two officers sustained minor injuries while trying to protect Mack.

Police say the suspect, a 30-year-old male from Hanover, was arrested without further incident.

The province’s police oversight agency, the Independent Investigations Unit, has been notified.
