Spectrum off to hoops provincial­s

The Spectrum Thunder defeated the Belmont Bulldogs 100-52 on Tuesday night in the Spectrum gymnasium in the Island QuadA boys’ high school basketball 2-vs.-3 provincial play-in game.

Spectrum lost to the Oak Bay Bays over the weekend at UVic’s CARSA gym in the Island championsh­ip game featuring the two top-ranked teams in the province. Belmont placed third in the Island tournament for the right to challenge the second-place team for the second Island berth into the B.C. championsh­ip. Oak Bay and Spectrum will represent the Island in the provincial tournament March 6-9 at the Langley Events Centre.

Dover Bay defeated the Mark Isfeld Ice of Courtenay 105-79 in the Triple-A championsh­ip game over the weekend in Nanaimo. The Wellington Wildcats beat Alberni District 80-66 in the bronze-medal game. Dover Bay, Mark Isfeld and Wellington advanced to the B.C. championsh­ip tournament March 6-9.

Host Brentwood College outlasted the John Barsby Bulldogs of Nanaimo 79-61 in the Island Double-A final while the Lambrick Park Lions beat the St. Michaels University School Blue Jags 79-73 in the thirdplace game. Brentwood College, John Barsby and Lambrick Park advanced to the provincial­s.

Duncan Christian beat Campbell River Christian 80-68 in the Single-A Island final in Duncan while Brookes Westshore defeated Cedar 63-37 in the bronze-medal game with the topthree teams advancing.

The B.C. high school girls’ championsh­ips run tonight through Saturday at the LEC. Representi­ng the Island are Oak Bay and Claremont in Quad-A, Reynolds and Mark Isfeld in Triple-A, Lambrick Park and Brentwood College in Double-A and top-ranked PCS in Single-A.
