Artificial turf fields open in Nanaimo
Bookings are now being taken for two new multi-use artificial turf fields in Nanaimo, which has officially opened.
The fields at Harewood Centennial Park include LED field lighting, paved walkways, covered benches, and bleachers with 400 seats. A media/coaching booth is expected this summer.
The new artificial turf fields can be used day and night for soccer, field lacrosse, football and minor baseball. School District 68’s athletic programs, including John Barsby High School’s football program, are expected to regularly use the east field.
Motorists have a new parking area off Howard Avenue and more parking is expected along Seventh Street by this summer.
Nanaimo’s growing population — now at 107,000 — helped fuel demand for the fields in the southern end of the city.
Opening the fields was a “momentous occasion,” Mayor Leonard Krog said in a statement. “These fields represent more than just green space.
They are a symbol of pride, opportunity and unity for our community. From football to soccer and many other sports, these fields will be home to countless sporting achievements, providing our youth with the facilities they deserve.”
Snuneymuxw First Nation Chief Michael Wyse advocated for the project in 2022, saying the fields would increase youth participation in sports.
The project was paid for by the City of Nanaimo, School District 68, B.C.’s Growing Communities Fund, and the federal Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
The project had an estimated budget of $4.9 million, but the final price tag was more than double that at $9.9 million.
As costs rose, city council debated last year whether to support longer-lasting artificial turf or use grass instead. The majority favoured going ahead with the tougher turf product.
Harewood Centennial Park also has a water park, an accessible playground, tennis courts, a lacrosse box and natural areas on the Chase River.
