Lawyer is early for Breakfast on Pluto

- SUSAN WALKER

KATHERINE SAM An early morning downpour didn’t deter Toronto lawyer Sam from getting into two line-ups at festival box offices. By 8 a.m. she had already been to the Manulife Centre festival box office and was awaiting the opening of the ticket booth at Ryerson Theatre. How many years have you been coming to the festival? “I’ve been coming for a few years, but I usually get given tickets. This is my first time for lining up. I’m hoping to get a ticket for Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang

with Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer. What do you plan to see? “I’m doing a bit of everything. But I don’t always come out for Hollywood movies that will get released commercially. I lined up yesterday (at the festival box office) and I’ve got 15 tickets. Capote: that will be tough to get tickets to, but I lucked out because someone gave me a ticket to that yesterday. (Neil Jordan’s) Breakfast on Pluto: I was at the box office this morning — it opens at 7 and I got tickets for that and for Little Fish (with Cate Blanchett) on Sunday. I won’t be seeing Water. At the box office yesterday I heard it sold out faster than anything. She said the tickets went within 40 minutes. Do you have a method for doing the festival? “You can get six tickets on the Globetrotter Day Pass for films recommended by the programmers . . . I did that. Fifteen movies is a lot in one week. On Saturday I’ll see four.” Sam looks very organized, with a festival guidebook tagged with colour-coded tabs. “Ha. That’s the law student in me. “I pre-paid for some tickets and I’ll line up ( on the day of screenings) for others I want to see.” As for tips, Sam says, “You get a lot out of talking to people in the line-up.”
