THE DEVIL AND DANIEL JOHNSTON

-

A moving portrait of Daniel Johnston, the emotionally disturbed singer-songwriter who has become an alt- music legend. Without ever resorting to sentiment or pity, filmmaker Jeff Feuerzeig paints a richly detailed portrait of a hulking lo- fi outsider genius. But while parts of Johnston’s life are dramatic and disturbing — he once deliberately crashed a plane being flown by his father — it’s the music that rises above it all: plaintive, sweet, raw and unforgettably catchy. ( Today, 2: 45 p. m., Paramount; Sept. 10, 3: 45 p. m., Paramount.) Geoff Pevere title — a cross between Gram Parsons and Sid Vicious — the film includes stone- straight testimonials by the likes of Kris Kristofferson, Ronnie Hawkins, Merle Haggard and Levon Helm. ( Tonight, 9: 15 p. m, Paramount; Sept. 11, 9 a. m., Paramount.) PH
