EVE & THE FIRE HORSE
Two girls growing up Cantonese in Vancouver in the mid-’ 70s find a way to fit in, taking up Catholicism. Meanwhile, their mother, with immigrant issues of her own, decides to try Buddhism. Grandma’s death plunges the whole family into a crisis of faith and superstition versus the harsh adjustment to life in Canada. Vancouver’s Julia Kwan directs her first feature with a light hand and an eye for ironic detail. ( Tonight, 9: 15 p. m., Varsity; Sept. 11, 3: 15 p. m., Cumberland.) Susan Walker
