SHANGHAI DREAMS

-

It lacks the simplicity ( but not the length) of Beijing Bicycle, an earlier work by Shanghai’s Wang Xiaoshuai that made a lyrical revisiting of Vittoria De Sica’s neo- realist classic, The Bicycle Thief, on the streets of Beijing. But this latest is more from the heart. Although set in the 1980s, it springs from Wang’s personal family hardships due to China’s brutal relocation policies of the 1960s, when families were sent to remote corners. Teenaged girl Qinghong (Gao Yuanyuan) is one such rootless soul. ( Today, 3: 30 p. m., Ryerson; Sept. 12, 3: 15 p. m., Cumberland; Sept. 17, 1: 15 p. m. Varsity.) PH
