Walrus magazine in arrears to writers

-

The award- winning Walrus magazine is having trouble paying its freelance writers. An exhausted sounding publishereditor Ken Alexander

told the Star last night that his battle with the federal government to obtain charitable status for the magazine has dragged on for three years. U. S. periodicals Harper’s, The Nation

and Atlantic Monthly, all of which are widely distributed in Canada, have that equivalent status south of the border.

“ I have had to plough all my own money into the magazine,’’ Alexander said. “ The well is only so deep.” He said all the writers would be paid and the magazine would go on. “ I hope this is only a temporary situation,” he added, saying he was waiting for ad revenue to come in.
