Hello, we must be going

- Rita Zekas Star Gazing

It had to happen — but we’re always amazed when it does.

Six days into the festival and we heard two words that strike fear into the heart of working journos: “ Cash bar.” Yuppers. A cash bar at the Sony party Tuesday night at Brant House. Am I missing something? Is Sony in the poorhouse? We could see nothing but suits in the VIP area but spotted Ivan Fecan, who has morphed into Graydon Carter, and Sandra Faire among the plebes. Party lines There was a much bigger lineup outside Chanel on Bloor on Tuesday for the Walk the Line soirée than in front of the Windsor Arms for the InStyle party.

Almost didn’t recognize Joaquin Phoenix inside the VIP area at Chanel because he was wearing a suit. Reese Witherspoon, who plays June Carter Cash to Phoenix’s Johnny Cash, was a noshow; she had hightailed it to the airport. The ringer for Bettie Page was Tracey May Miller and the tall dude with the Lyle Lovett haircut was her husband Dan John Miller, who plays guitar player Luther Perkins. And just when we were getting neighbourly, we were ejected from the VIP room. “ The only reason I let you in was because I thought you were a publicist,” said the door nazi.

That’s a new one. We’re so used to being given the bum’s rush from VIP areas, that we’ve developed a Teflon posterior. We moved on to the Spanish and Latin American Crystal Room on Queen West for the Spanish and Latin American Films. Enjoying the ambiance and the Mojitos: Carlos Saura and Eduardo Noriega. And the Bacardi flowed, unlike the Premiere Lounge at Club Monaco where they ran out of booze round about midnight. Side dish Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber Sotto Sotto’d Tuesday night, right about the same time Gabriel Byrne was sweet talking a fulsome young lady on the patio at Prego. Cameron Diaz dined at Chiado on Tuesday, ditto Forrest Whitaker. Lauren Bacall was caught buying doughnuts at Tim Horton’s across the King Eddie Hotel early this week.

Joaquin Phoenix had a vegan lunch catered by Flow yesterday and Kate Hudson ate sushi at the Cosmopolitan Hotel on Sunday night with a small party including Woody Harrelson but not

Cuba Gooding Jr.

Harrelson was at the U2 concert last night. Norman Jewison dined at Bloor Street Diner on Monday. Helena Bonham Carter was walking along Cumberland in the pouring rain yesterday carefully shielding a cardboard cutout from the turbulence. Among recent shoppers at Roots: William H. Macy, hot director Jason Reitman ( Thank You for Smoking), Frances McDormand, Chris Blackwell, Bob Hoskins, Stephen Dorff, Gretchen Mol, Margaret Cho and Helena Bonham Carter or a cut- out version there- of.
