Sewer gap grates on neighbours

- JACK LAKEY STAFF REPORTER

A sunken sewer grate on a midtown residential street looks as though it was forgotten and should have been fixed months ago, area residents say. The grate is on the northwest corner of Glencairn Ave. and Heather St., near Lawrence Ave. and Yonge St., an upscale area of older, well-appointed homes and mature trees. Don Short, who emailed us about it, says the grate collapsed about nine months ago and was a gaping danger for several months before a construction pylon was placed over it.

Not long after that, city workers covered the hole with an old plywood road sign and two orangepylons. But as of Friday, nobody had returned to make the final repairs. When we checked it out, we noticed a section of sidewalk by the grate was recently replaced with asphalt, with white markings on it, as if to mark out an underground utility line.

Short said the hole was “big enough for a toddler to fall into.” Another neighbour told us the pylons have been there so long he no longer notices them. * STATUS: Trevor Tenn, who’s in charge of road problems in that area, said the grate sank after some water main work was done next to it, which explains the asphalt. He said the grate would be fixed this week. * WHO’S GETTING IT FIXED: Trevor Tenn, north district manager of road operations; 416395-6270; ttenn@toronto.ca * UPDATE 1: Our Thursday story was about a rust-eaten postal box on Ellesmere Rd., near Brimley Rd. Canada Post’s Eugene Knapic says it’s been removed. * UPDATE 2: On Friday, we reported Toronto Councillor Bill Saundercook had a ratty Canadian flag replaced in Malta Park, near Dundas St. W. and St. John’s Rd. There was a photo of him hoisting the new flag. Several people called to say that in the photo, part of the flag touched the ground, which was disrespectful. Sometimes you just can’t win.
