* Park website: www.nps.gov/ zion * Nearest town: Springdale, Utah * How to get there: The nearest major airport is in Las Vegas, a threehour drive away. Numerous Vegas operators run day trips to Zion and nearby Bryce Canyon. * Establishe­d: 1919 * Size: 593 square km * Highest elevation: 2,660 metres * OPEN: Year-round, except Kolob Terrace Rd., which is closed in winter. Winters are generally mild in the canyon itself, with daytime temperatur­es averaging 12C or higher, but snow accumulate­s at greater elevations. Though summer is the busiest time, in July and August temperatur­es can be sweltering. * ENTRANCE FEE: $20 (U.S.) per vehicle or $10 per individual (pedestrian or cyclist), valid for seven days. * ACTIVITIES: Hiking, camping, cycling, rock climbing. In addition to self-guided activities, there are ranger-led hikes throughout the year. * WHAT TO BRING: At the very least, come equipped with adequate hiking gear, sun protection, food and water. Prepare for a variety of weather conditions. There is a good supply store in Springdale, just a five-minute walk from the Zion visitor centre. * ACCOMMODAT­ION: If you’re staying overnight, there are numerous hotels in Springdale, just south of the park. If you’d like to be closer to the gorgeous view, the best place to stay is at Zion Lodge (www.zionlodge. situated within Zion Canyon next to towering cliffs. The Lodge’s rooms are simple but nice and it has an excellent restaurant.
