Accused was out on bail
The man accused of being the notorious Recipe Card Bandit was already on bail for drug and stolen property charges when the three- month bank robbery spree occurred. Kenneth Calver, 36, was arrested Monday afternoon in south Mississauga and charged with 31 counts of robbery in Greater Toronto and Hamilton.
Calver appeared briefly in Brampton court yesterday and was remanded in custody until his next hearing Nov. 28. Crown counsel Robert Butler told court an agreement had been reached to revoke bail granted to Calver on Nov. 2 last year, when he was charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, having stolen property and break- in tools. Under that bail order, he was to have lived with a girlfriend in Brampton, but it is believed that after their break- up he had been living in motels and with friends in other parts of Peel.
Calver, his hair dyed mustard- yellow, stood silently in the prisoner’s box during yesterday’s hearing. He wore a grey T- shirt and track pants.
His lawyer, Deepak Paradkar, said it’s unlikely Calver would apply for a new bail release.
“ I don’t think he has any hope of getting bail,” Paradkar said outside court.
“ I think we’re going to take a look at what counts they can and cannot prove, get all the disclosure from all the jurisdictions, throw it together and see how clear the photographs are.” The Recipe Card Bandit — who got his nickname because he used recipe cards to write hold- up notes — had remained unidentified throughout his robbery spree despite clear digital photographs from bank surveillance cameras. But police began receiving tips after the Canadian Bankers Association offered a $ 10,000 reward on Nov. 3.
